Good to know
JPG is lossy: each time a JPG is edited and saved again, it's compressed again and can lose a little more detail. PNG is lossless, so converting gives you a working copy that doesn't degrade however many times you save it. That's useful when you plan several rounds of edits, want to add text or overlays, or need to meet a requirement that specifically says PNG.
Set your expectations, though. Converting doesn't bring back detail the JPG has already lost, and it doesn't make the background transparent: JPG has no transparency, so the PNG starts with none either. PNG files are also considerably larger than JPGs for photos, so convert back to JPG or compress the image before you email it.
Questions and answers
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG stores the image exactly as it is now, which prevents further loss, but it can't restore detail that JPG compression has already removed.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. A JPG has no transparent areas, so the converted PNG doesn't either; the photo's background stays as it is.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
PNG is lossless and keeps all the image data, so photos take up more space than they do as JPG. That's the trade-off for a file that won't lose quality when you edit it.
